PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project: Carbon and Filteraid Steel Storage Silos
Hammond, Indiana
Client: Cerestar USA, Inc.
Services:  Structural Evaluation, Field Condition Survey, Ultrasonic Thickness Testing, and Repair Recommendations.

Structure Evaluation Engineers, Inc. (SEE)  was retained to assess the existing condition of Carbon and Kennite steel storage silos and provide recommendations for remedial work as necessary to maintain them for the next two years.

The steel silos were approximately 64 feet tall and 15 to 18 feet in diameter. They were constructed with pre-formed plates and the adjacent plates were bolted together to form a tube. Each silo had eight sections. Silos exhibited moderate to severe corrosion that was generally worse at the bolt lines. The existing steel coating within the corroded areas was blistered and cracked. The ultrasonic thickness testing revealed 25% thickness reduction. Additionally the silos exhibited buckled panels at the top sections of the silos due to excessive negative pressures within the silos. Three repairs options were provided in order to maintain for the next two years.

SEE   provided existing condition assessment, ultrasonic thickness testing, and prepared a report that included our observations, testing, conclusions, and repair recommendations.
